Why don't links on PH open in a new tab?

For example, I'm adding a link that you should look at in regards to this subject: tycoontalk.freelancer.com/html-forum/… but don't forget to right click open in a new tab so you can look at it before you come back and post or continue reading. – jatx www.jasonmoore.me Feb 23 2012 at 15:47
or scroll wheel click like Nivanthe suggested – jatx www.jasonmoore.me Feb 23 2012 at 16:11
or ctrl click like Bree suggested! – jatx www.jasonmoore.me Feb 23 2012 at 16:12

I open links by clicking with the scroll wheel, which opens it in a new tab. My personal preference!

General web usability guidelines suggest that it is improper to impose browser functionality on users. Some people prefer opening links in the same tab in order to maintain navigation history (utilizing the back button).

If you want a new tab, right click on the link and select "open in new tab". That functionality is pretty ubiquitous across most recent browser versions.

I might be behind the times a bit on web usability, but I find that most sites linking outside their domain typically open a new window/tab. – Matt Feb 23 2012 at 16:08

I'm agreeing with Matt on this one. – jatx www.jasonmoore.me Feb 23 2012 at 16:09
I'm with Matt too. And every site I do, I make sure the links open ina new page/tab. But I have one site I go to that not only has their links open in the same tab, but right-clicking is disallowed on the site! Talk about maddening. – PaleoDel Feb 23 2012 at 20:53
Users are often poorly equipped at expressing what they like or hate about an interface, and often-times say they like one thing, but during monitored user trials demonstrate frustration with the same mechanism. The fact that many websites incorporate a mechanism is not necessarily indicative of its inherent usability, but more often than not is just the nature of practices becoming common enough that you have to provide them because they are expected. I encourage you to peruse Jakob Nielsen's website useit.com - he is considered the foremost authority on website usability. – David Csonka Feb 24 2012 at 0:21
Anyway, forcing an action (open new tab on link click) has the perhaps unintended consequence of removing functionality that other users might prefer (open in same tab). This is not optimal considering it requires no extra effort on your part to open a page in a new tab, since all you have to do is click a different button on your mouse to accomplish it. – David Csonka Feb 24 2012 at 0:23

Press the control button (if you're a pc user) before you click your mouse and it will open in a new tab

I always right click and open in new tab myself...

Me too. This is the only site that I go to to that I need to do that though. – Warren D Feb 23 2012 at 19:47
