My farts and burps have disappeared on this diet. Is it the same for cows?

Are you eating 100% grass? – Matt Feb 23 2012 at 18:51

More grass = more ferementation = more methane. – Matt Feb 23 2012 at 18:52
Is this methane situation a real environmental problem? – Soccertanker Feb 23 2012 at 18:56

Matthew, I'm simply wondering if switching cows to their ancestral diet will have similar effects as switching us to our ancestral diet. – Soccertanker Feb 23 2012 at 19:00
Soccertanker -I think you should clarify your question. Especially the title, that is -if you want any real answers. – Senneth Feb 23 2012 at 19:24

Yes, grass fed cows produce less methane. It has something to do with their omega-3/6 ratio, so they're even trying to give cows in CAFOs fish oil.

See for example http://www.motherearthnews.com/sustainable-farming/grass-fed-cattle-zm0z10zrog.aspx

EDIT: After Jay mentioned it's the other way, I did some digging and it seems he's right.

FALSE; grass fed cows produce more methane. – Jay Feb 24 2012 at 1:30
Fun fact, it is those farty beasties, who are ironically our best bet at reversing global warming by chomping on the grasslands and compacting the snow underfoot to prevent melting. Mother earth is about to let out one hell of a methane cloud up in Siberia (if Sergey Zimov is right, and the permafrost melts much more there are going to be clouds of methane released into the atmosphere that will overshadow all the cows, landfills, and industry put together). Cattle drive to Siberia anyone? – Happy Now Feb 24 2012 at 9:48
Whose job is it to check for cow farts anyway? – henny Feb 26 2012 at 20:55

In new zealand where cows are are almost entirely reared on grass there was talk of making farmers buy carbon credits to offset the methane production.

This doesn't answer the question; also, it's unnecessarily rude. Everyone starts out a "noob." – January Feb 23 2012 at 22:41
