Should I quit the forum?

by 0 · June 17, 2014 at 10:49 PM

Seems like my opinions are being attacked by a moderator. Seems like it's time to go.

From Dave: Hi everyone,

This is exactly the kind of drama that we do NOT need on this site. You and @VB have been warned. I will not tolerate toxic, trolling behavior. It contributes nothing to this site or its users and only serves to validate your own egos.

Thank you @Matt 11 for closing this thread.

Hi. Please do not quit the forum. I feel this forum is very valuable. We may all eat and exercise differently. We do not have to be where someone else is. I look at this forum as a place to learn. When I first started Paleo , I started slow. I have made more positive changes a long the way. I am not 100 percent Paleo , but it is working for me. I notice some people are the forum are very direct, but I feel the information they give is good. Thank you all for the knowledge you share.

So someone is automatically labelled as a bully or moron simply because he/she disagrees with your opinion? This is a discussion board. We aren't all going to agree on one thing. That is hardly being a bully.

This is just silly

It is up to you, but I wouldn't quit this forum because of two (or three or more) bullies or morons. Why do you think they come here? To raise their self-esteem that is probably dangerously (for others) low. Most likely, they don't get any, don't know what to do with their hands, etc.

You can either ignore them, fight them or mock them - it is up to you. I personally prefer the mockery because it is a lot of fun.

Also, look at the situation this way: they are just a bunch of young kids, inexperienced, who know close to... nothing. So they are trying to "impress" the others on Paleohacks by showing off. Well, it is pretty obvious to people who are older and wiser that they are ... let me put it mildly - not that knowledgeable.

Plus, high testosterone levels lead to aggressive behavior. I don't even think they realize it themselves that they appear aggressive. By the way, you attacked him yourself! You called him a troll and told him to go away!!!

If I were you, I would stick around, because chances are, you will get a lot of good answers (and some bad ones too) to your questions. Just ignore their comments, questions, and answers.

First. As a "Moderator" I get to delete spam -- and I do it for free. So let's not put some perception of grandeur around a position that is essentially a trash collector -- I certainly do not.

Did I attack your postions? Yes -- that's called intellectual honesty. But while I tired to engage in a debate (weird for a Q&A forum), you simply attacked me personally.

  • You asked, "Would you be Paleo if you had to give up salt?". Implicit in your question is two things (1. Salt is not Paleo (which I challenged); 2. that ideology should be coveted above health (which I challenged)) In response to this I provided you with several peer-reviewed articles that show the danger of low salt intake. I also researched your supplement and advised you that table salt is one of the primary ingredients. -- your response was to down-vote me
  • I claimed that (apparently controversial) the paleo diet was about achieving optimal health. You said I was in the wrong place and called me a troll. Then you said, "Our interest" is living a paleo life and that "There is no need for defending arguments." -- Obviously you realize how counter this is to having an open discussion. Thus, I challenged this on the both accounts. You responded by saying that there were "several books, magazines" that suggest paleo diet is only about reenactment. I gave you 11 "gurus" who publicly disagree with your statement. Rather than providing me with a single link to the several books you simply called me a troll, and called the "gurus", "self proclaimed experts". Maybe they are self-proclaimed, but three of them foundde the diet, and thus should be given some level of authoritative status.

I would not suggest that you leave this forum, I would suggest that you be prepared to defend and discuss your opinion (preferably through scientific analysis) without resulting in ad hominem attacks.

You need to understand that this is a forum and people debate in forums. I might go so far as to call this a debate forum, even though it's labeled as a Q&A. If you don't like it when people disagree with you, if you don't like defending your position, if you don't like conflict and opposition, then yes - quit. If you can take a little heat and learn from disagreements then stick it out and grow some thicker skin.

Understand that nobody is always right. I can absolutely guarantee that many of your "opinions" are downright wrong. I know for certain that some of my own opinions are wrong. I take the arguments with a grain of salt and usually keep my opinions, even if they're wrong.

If you don't like the heat, get out of the kitchen. You've done your share of stirring the pot, and - SURPRISE! - you aren't getting a free pass on it. Grow some thick skin, this is the interwebz. You aren't being attacked, you're just playing a victim card.

Whoever this moderator is, they were probably attacking your arguments, not you as a person. You perhaps took it personally, but I highly doubt it was meant that way.

As far as quitting goes.. I doubt there is much efficacy in a mostly anonymous diet forum anyways, and most of the time when people are typing they are sitting, and that time could otherwise be spent doing something to enhance your health, not detract from it. Also, there is such a thing as information overload and paralysis by analysis, which I feel paleo diet "experts" (aka salesmen) are masters at perpetuating. Eat healthy. Move more. Portion control (i.e. calorie control). That simple. So, yes, I say quit. Go that route. It's much better.

I'm not a moderator. :D

Also, it's all about outlook. Don't view them as attacks, view them as caring nudges back to reality. ^^
