Can anyone explain why I can eat a tub of ice cream or lots of chocolate everyday with no apparent issues but if I add 'safe' starches instead I start gaining body fat within days? In both cases we're talking about adding in 100g carbs to a... (more)

Hello everyone! I'm new here and thought I'd jump right in and see if any other ladies have experienced this. About a year ago I "got serious" on my quest for health with an ill-advised 1400-1600/cal day, low fat, chronic cardio sort of... (more)

Those pseudocereals do not contain gluten, and contain some nutrients as well. What role do you think they should play on a paleo diet? Do you consume them? (Why?).

If you can eat and have access to plenty of paleo friendly carbs - squash, sweet potatoes, potatoes, plantains - I wouldn't think you'd go looking for more or only rarely/seasonally. I have celiac disease and the genes for other autoimmune... (more)

I am a 21 yr old female around130lbs, 5'8" and have been eating paleo (no grains, sugars, very limited fruit or high glycemic veggies, no soy, gluten, dairy, etc.) for several years. I have been eating 1300 calories/day for 3-4 years and the... (more)

There's a lot of debate on the hypothyroidism and Iodine thing, my understanding (from what I have read about this subject) is that iodine should help a lot stimulating conversion from T4 to T3, BUT in some cases an immune reaction may work in the... (more)

I haven't experienced 'horrendous fat cravings' but more like an increased taste for fat - which makes perfect sense. Your body has to run on something, if it's not carbs then you only have fat left to choose from. You have to pick to your fuel,... (more)

I've heard that starches can cause or contribute to leaky gut. I have celiac and I'm doing strict paleo to help with healing. Should I avoid sweet potatoes and squashes and such?

By themselves, no. If you're coming from a place where your just starting, the previous diet was a mess and you have leaky gut, eating lots of starchy veggies may inhibit the healing of leaky gut. I'd avoid them for a little bit of time and... (more)

I have these really bad rashes on my arms, could eggs be a contributor? Would it make sense if eggs were contributing to increased intestinal permeability and resulting in an autoimmune response in my skin?

We've all heard about "safe starches" like sweet potatoes, yams and taro. But what about Cassava(yuca), plantains(starchy bananas), Malanga, Name (white yam),Boniatos (cuban sweet potatoes) Gold skin potatoes, red skin potatoes and russet potatoes? (more)

If you aren't trying to lose weight what's so bad about starchy foods and carbs? It seems to be a bad word in the paleosphere.

If your weight is where you want it, you don't have any digestive issues, autoimmune probs, etc., and you're eating paleo-carbs (veggies, certain fruits, etc.), then there really isn't a problem. Some people can tolerate a lot higher carb level... (more)

Is there an optimal time of day to consume carbs? Do you run into problems with blood sugar when consuming carbs with meals that are higher in fat than other meals? More carbs from fruit, "safe starches", or a little of both?

Fitday have recently posted an article on "resistant starches". Should Paleo followers drop their guard to include some of these, and if so which ones.

Depends on who you ask and what you're trying to accomplish. If you want to feed your gut bacteria some starch, then go for it. If you're trying to avoid feeding your gut bacteria, then RS and other poorly digested/absorbed carbs are your worst... (more)
