Is Mark Sisson a roider?

http://www.slowtwitch.com/Features/Mark_Sisson_says_training_is_no_guarantee_of_health._4.html

I googled "mark sisson steroids" because I was curious how a 50-something year old can maintain such an amazing physique year round. I came up with the article above linked from a 30bad.com. Call me jealous, because I am. I wish I looked that good now, let alone 30+ years from now.

I understand he could just be a genetic freak (in which case his advice about diet/exercise is probably irrelevant), I know the saying "abs are built in the kitchen and not the gym," and I also know that although he looks good, his current fitness levels are only around average.

In the article he talks about the negatives of endurance training (which he did a lot of) and then addresses ways to combat this, one of them being the use of "therapeutic amounts of testosterone...to balance out high levels of cortisol when I have gone to the well too much."

I am just curious what your thoughts are. Has anyone ever asked him point blank in person if he does or use any such anabolic/anti-ageing aids? i know that both HGH and testosterone are becoming more commonly utilized by high end, anti aging doctors. Thank you for your responses.

@Tyler: I 100% agree. Isn't that why we are all here? He found that magical variation. We are all seeking what he found.

@forever, I don't think Tyler was attacking you. I think he's lamenting the fact that the masses are so unhealthy as a whole they accuse anyone that looks good to be on roids. This goes for young people as well. If you have visible muscles you must be on drugs right? Who actually gets that way from eating well and exercising?

And actually, if he admitted to roiling he would destroy his credibility. I was just wondering if he has, it's not accusing or anything. IT sounds like he hasn't admitted to doing or not doing them judging from the answers so far.

That's exactly why Mark is such a great example: he's in amazing health because he found the variation of paleo that works best for him.

I don't know about the diets of these elder superheroes, but one thing I have learned from PH is that VLC makes some people feel dead, and makes others feel great. A big part of eating paleo style is to find just what foods work for your individual needs. I think Mark has found exactly what works for him. Without mentioning Sisson by name, I think this thread could actually spawn a great discussion. I think your concerns are valid. I'm also a huge believer in Sisson, so I've got a horse in this race. I'd be horrified if he roided.

"If the title is a question, the answer is always 'yes'." Questioning someone's methods is one thing, but suggesting (and yes, your wording IS suggestive) that their hard-earned health and physique are the result of drugs is nothing short of insulting, and, as the closing message so accurately puts it, "subjective and argumentative".

Yeah, I agree. I just don't know anyone VLC who destroys athletes younger them, and/or is a phenomenal physical specimen. Can you name another VLC year round and in the kind of shape Sisson is in? I bet they aren't VLC high fat but actually cycle carbs and definitely consume them post workout.

The "norm." Get out and post a pic of your ripped VLC high fat body with minimal body fat and yet a substantial amount of muscle mass. Maybe you should take some more English classes, Tyler. Accusing and asking are not one and the same thing, you know.

Yeah, my father is in his mid-50s and looks great too. But he eats grains and a lot of fruit and is not nearly as muscular as Sisson, despite rowing every single day for the past 20 years or so.

It's almost depressing that people think someone looking strong and healthy in their later years is now considered grounds for accusing them of shooting up roids or whatever, as opposed to being seen as a good thing or even the norm.

There are several problems with this:

  1. The link is from 30bad. Don't expect it to be very truthful.
  2. Sisson was giving a hypothetical example of how someone who wanted to do endurance training could do so without destroying their body.
  3. Do we really want PH to be a place to gossip about people? There's no evidence or reason to believe Sisson takes any such things, and any such speculation could only amount to baseless accusations.

Well, my husband who is 65, is an example of one who looks physically decades younger. The last time he went for a total check-up, which was 15 years ago (he hates going), the doctor told him he had never seen a man his age in such great condition. How does he do this? He eats as I do most of the time (almost 100% paleo) but adds grain carbs for snacks (darn(:). The key is that he has always done what Sisson suggests; he is always moving and lifting heavy things, with the occasional spurt of energy used. He is a physically active person (carpenter) in his daily life. Anyway, seeing Sisson did not suggest to me at all that he is a steroid user. I think he certainly was born with good genes (being a runner) but it is possible to be very fit and good to look at:).

If he roided, it would destroy all his credibility and thus, his livelihood. He is genetically gifted with great discipline, and an amazing knowledge of what works for his body. 50 isn't that old. He lives his life according to his principles. Former athletes that still look the part are not uncommon. Jerry Rice is still destroying young pros during his training camp.
