I used to be a sugar addict and pasta was my favorite food. I ignored all nutrition advice because there were so many contraversies and so much dogmatism I couldn't figure out what to believe. It was easier to ignore it all and continue eating chocolate, candy, ice cream, and microwaveable food. But I wanted to lose some weight. When I read The Four Hour Body by Tim Ferris a lot of what he said made sense to me. Things have to make sense to me before I'll do them. I lost weight on his plan (the Slow Carb method), but I couldn't sustain the diet. It was too hard - the "cheat days" meant my cravings didn't go away so I was continually struggling with my food. Plus it felt like I was just trying to get through it to go back to how I used to eat, which I knew wasn't healthy but I didn't know what else to do. I stumbled onto Paleo, and it made even MORE sense. And it wasn't about trying to lose weight--it was about eating in a way that was natural and healthy. I can't really know if this science or that science is better or more true--there is a lot of controversy it seems like, and everyone saying their science proves this or that. But I do know that I've never really felt great after eating bread or pasta. I noticed that a long time ago but I was in denial of what it implied. Sugar too...it doesn't feel good. Whereas with meat and veggies and fruit, I feel great. Paleo aligns to my visceral sense of "this is good for me", and that's important. I'm in the process of cleaning out my pantry and building a new recipe collection. I'm looking forward to becoming more connected to the community. |
