How can I force myself to eat more?

Hello all. I'm a scrawny 25 year old male. I was raised on a pure junk food diet, had IBS, depression, half my teeth out and the rest filled in and a whole host of other problems.

Over the last year I've massively improved by eating mostly stews. I stew bones, organs, seafood, grass-fed fatty meats and some veg. With a great emphasis on organs. But too much fat makes me nauseous.

The problem is, I'm always low on energy since I'm eating no more than 1000kcal a day. I find it very hard to eat a lot, paleo on non paleo. The only thing I can gorge on is chocolate, ice cream and similar sweet things.

I had a massive improvement on bulletproof coffee when I forced myself to drink it, but have given up coffee as it makes me jitter. I've also eaten 250g of butter through the day but more than a mouthful at a time makes me nauseous.

To make matters worse, too many carbs (potatoes/fruit) lowers my energy and brings back my depression.

How can I consume more food?

Im upvoting this as while I don't personally use it, your suggestion is a good one for many people.Better would be to eat the mj or use a vaporizer. TONS of anxtioxidants in mj.Its stupid that somebody would down vote this & not leave a comment.Increasing appetite & mood are well documented uses of mj.I have a friend who has a medical Mj card for chronic pain and it got him off of Oxycontin (he has a liver issue so cant take RX meds, & another who is an Iraq war vet friend with severe PTSD & depression who was issued a medical marijuana card BY HIS VERTERN'S ADMIN. M.D. Goooo Army!!

If you are underweight go straight for honey or maple syrup and skip the sugar substitutes, you need the calories.

Sunshine may have more effects than just from the vitamin D. Even 15 minutes of good sun first thing in the morning really helps a lot of people with depression.

Great Rowan. Can you get out a little bit? I personally need 8000 a day to keep my level maintained at 80+/- but Im in Seattle. Yes I would start high. Others will likely disagree. Best is to have D3 with K vitamins and Vit A. You take cod liver so your A is covered. I use a product by Allergy Research Group called D3 Complete and then I add to is some plain D3. All the best to you. Get outside!!!

Thanks very much Crowlover! That's a good point, I couldn't describe my mood as chirpy, just ticking by really. I take Cod Liver Oil, but no D3. Since the beginning of this year I've gone from working outside in the blazing Australian sun to working in a British office. Will definitely supplement 8000IUs or so?

I would not force myself to eat more. In fact, I would not force myself to do anything. Can you eat more protein? Just eat meat, fish and some veggies. Caviar has a lot of calories. If you cannot eat butter, don't force yourself. I don't do well on fat either. I would not consume too many carbs if they lower your energy. Maybe you just need to stay on Paleo longer? Can you start doing weigh lifting? Like a little bit at a time? if you like ice-cream, make your own (sugar free), or drink some cream (if you want to).

Rowan I wonder how much of what you describe is related to your depression. I can personally relate to how hard it is to eat when you have NO appetite (from depression. Been there bad a couple times).

Are you getting outdoors? Are you getting sun everyday? What is your vitamin D level?
Most people are low unless they are in the sun everyday for a long time.
You will like need to supplement with D3 to get your blood level up to 60-80 (you may need keep yours on the high end)

Its a vicious cycle for sure the depression and not eating and then lack of protein and nutrients causing worsening of depression. My thought is that if you tackle your loss of appetite (depression) it will help - a lot!

All the best

Add bacon, eggs, hamburgers. I would also add potatoes, white rice, fruit. If that still isn't enough, try frying the potatoes in tallow, lard or coconut oil. Also, you could add dried fruit. I think you want to add more variety in terms of tastes/textures/etc (i.e., higher food reward). I'm guessing you may have problems with dairy, but if not, do full fat yogurt, add melted cheese to stuff, etc.

I am skinny, too. I've found that's it's easy to get a lot of calories through drinking whole milk.

Scrambled eggs + butter + cheese is another dense high calorie meal. Use Gordon Ramsay's method to make the eggs.

I had the same problem you had with butter - it's hard to eat it alone. But if you combine it with lean cold cuts (try buying roast beef or roast turkey that is roasted at the grocery store and doesn't have any salt or preservatives added) it is pretty darn good.

For the same reason I usually suggest people avoid smoothies and protein shakes, you should probably drink them, lots of calories easily ingested.

How about some smoothies made with heavy cream? It would be like the ice cream you like, but no sugar. And you could make just a bit at a time, to avoid the nausea. Use berries, frozen is fine. If you want to sweeten it, you could add a touch of stevia or xyla.

Try decaf Bulletproof or decaf with cream. That's how Peter at Hyperlipid gets a lot of his calories.

Also, exercise is a good appetite stimulator/mood elevator. It doesn't have to be strenuous, walking is a good place to start. (I don't recommend intense exercise for someone with a tendency toward depressive moods. Too much cortisol. Cortisol + depression = bad.)

Aside from the above, maybe you could try some strenuous exercise to increase your appetite. I notice I am usually far hungrier on days following a heavy workout.

This is tough. I feel great with Bulletproof coffee and an eating window about 4-6 hours a day. I eat very high quality with assorted protein, veggies and fats. All the highest quality I can afford/find. With that said, I'm trying to put on some muscle and I find it very tough to eat enough "quality."

I try to really focus on extra fats. Coconut oil, butter, dark chocolate (I love 100% Cacao) and use them with veggies. One of my biggest issues is that I love sweet potatoes, squash, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, kale, etc. Those things fill me up and are NOT caloric. By time I eat a whole squash and a sweet potato, I feel really full and it's tough to get more calories, even when I cook those in butter or oil. I've really dialed in the eating window too and don't want to change that as I feel it's great for energy and optimal training for me.

My main solution is just more fat. However I can do it, more fat. Up to 80% daily calories from fat. That's the only way I've been able to get enough calories.

Smoke marijuana, it will increase your appetite, and aid your depression.
