First week of Paleo... And i have questions...

I decided to give the Paleo lifestyle a go as advised by my personal trainer (he loves it). So far apart from the cravings for bread i am doing not too bad. My main reason for getting into Paleo is weight loss and for the health benefits. However i have a couple of questions.

  1. Will having a small splash of milk in my coffee 3 times a day make a real difference?
  2. Will having one can of diet soda per day be catastrophic?
  3. Is there any 'Paleo Approved' food that i should cut out for weight loss reasons?
  4. I hate egg, any recommendations for a filling breakfast?
  5. Is frozen veg and meat ok?
  6. This week my shopping bill tripled! Any ideas to live Paleo on a budget?
  7. If i was to buy one Paleo book, what should i get?

Thanks very much for all your help. Already found this site ever so useful!

where is the scientific data showing aspartme to be dangerous? I love that paleo is generally the most pro science lifestyle but it has these pockets of ignorance when it comes to things like aspartme or gmos Ask any scientist what they think of sweetners and GMOs, they will tell you positive things. People need to stop with the fuck diet coke attitude with no data whatsoever to back up their dogma.

Ooh I thought of a way to save money. LIVER! 500g costs me only $1.50. Just fry it up, add some lemon juice, cumin and balsamic vinegar.

And I should have said 'fruit and tubers' are the ones to limit if you want to lose weight. Especially the fruit.

Will having a small splash of milk in my coffee 3 times a day make a real difference? Probably not. Cream would be better - less sugar, more fat.

Will having one can of diet soda per day be catastrophic? DO NOT DRINK DIET SODA.

Is there any 'Paleo Approved' food that i should cut out for weight loss reasons? Might want to limit fruit and nuts.

I hate egg, any recommendations for a filling breakfast? I can't eat eggs so I eat ground beef, lamb or turkey with herbs/seasoning (very fast to cook), or roast chicken thighs/legs/wings, or broiled fish, along with veggies and fat for breakfast.

Is frozen veg and meat ok? Frozen meat is fine if organic, high-quality. Frozen veg - ugh. The taste alone..

This week my shopping bill tripled! Any ideas to live Paleo on a budget? Google this or search in the toolbar top right - lots of tips out there. I still spend a lot on food, but to me it's worth it. And I'm not drinking booze and I eat out less so it evens out.

If i was to buy one Paleo book, what should i get? Practical Paleo, Primal Health Diet, The Paleo Solution are a few I like.

Since most of your questions have been answered I won't enumerate...

You can try coconut cream in coffee if you later find your body rejecting milk as your body acclimates to the Paleo diet (may or may not happen).

I love egg. That said, I make a mean coconut cream smoothie that's super-simple and quick for breakfast. Just start with some frozen fruit and coconut cream (usually strawberries or blueberries with about half a can of cream), add in a ripe banana (or half if you're avoiding the carbs), then some whole fat plain yogurt (I sometimes use raw egg here, which you can't taste so try it with in place of yogurt.) now you can top with cinnamon and/or vanilla if you wish and I occationally blend in some greens at the end. You could put them in early if you don't like the texture but I dig it.

Cheap Paleo calories: FAT... butter, coconut oil, coconut cream (a $1.50 can from trader joes sports 850 cal), lard, bacon, etc... and if you're on a budget then don't get carried away with free range and grass fed.

You don't really need a book but I'd suggest the Perfect Health Diet if you want one.

My opinions: 1. I found when I completely eliminated dairy my brain worked better than ever. No brain fog. No huge difference if you can't live without it.

  1. Diet soda? Shudder. Get rid of it, you won't regret it.

  2. Only tubers. Although I found I lost weight while still incorporating sweet potato into my diet. But if you plateau, cut the potatoes.

  3. Smoothies.

  4. I believe so.

  5. Nope! Wish I knew. It's expensive!

  6. Have not read any of them myself so can't say.

Ok. Here's my somewhat heterodox answer:

  1. Will having a small splash of milk in my coffee 3 times a day make a real difference?

No. But the lactose in normal milk will count towards your carbohydrate load.

  1. Will having one can of diet soda per day be catastrophic?

No. If you need it to maintain your sanity, have at it. However as some people transition better by going "cold turkey" you may prefer to cut all sweet flavoured things.

  1. Is there any 'Paleo Approved' food that i should cut out for weight loss reasons?

All starches, grains and anything with fructose will seriously impact fat-burning adaptation.

  1. I hate egg, any recommendations for a filling breakfast?

Hmm. Sausages, bacon, fried cheese, tuna - or skip the morning meal entirely as the first meal of the day is important, not when it occurs.

  1. Is frozen veg and meat ok?

Yes. Usually the quality is less; but that doesn't really matter for straight-up weight loss. Defrosting large chunks of food can be pain though.

  1. This week my shopping bill tripled! Any ideas to live Paleo on a budget?

Less Paleo ideals and more Paleo pragmatism. :-) But seriously, taken to the extremes Paleo can be as expensive as any gourmet diet... All those master-class Paleo refinements can be left to the chefs or the time-rich. Just start with cheap meats, fats and leafy greens and scale up to fancy super-foods and organic produce if or when merited later on. It's like a fully equipped gym membership vs "running about and lifting things" approach.

  1. If i was to buy one Paleo book, what should i get?

Well, I can tell what not to get:

  • Don't get a book that's basically just an oversized cookbook.
  • Make sure it backs up any assertions or claims with clinical science.
  • If it discourages meat or fat or similar hunter-gather food paradigms; it's been written by recalcitrant vegans.

  1. No, go ahead if your gut feels fine with milk
  2. Yes, that stuff is evil
  3. Limit fruit if you want to lose weight fast
  4. Avocado salad with bacon - or google "Paleo breakfast recipes"
  5. Fresh is better but if you are on a budget, frozen is ok
  6. How much is your health worth ?
  7. No idea

Ok, first of all, paleo is a pretty broad term nowadays. This site is great because to an extent, most people here are understanding and we live by the mantra "If you are happy, healthy, and feel great then eat what you want!"

Now that being said, a lot of people choose paleo for health benefits. There is actually a very strict diet paleo based called Whole30 that really is the bees knees for alleviating a majority of health problems and resetting the way your body metabolizes and digests. You have probably been eating the SAD for most of your life, so I would strongly encourage you to cut out all the crap altogether, and don't just half-ass it, but anything is better than what you were doing before.

There are actually many who incorporate some dairy into their diet, you may want to research the primal diet if you can't break your cravings for milk. At least change the type of milk you use (ex. raw goat milk or something). As far as diet soda, that is very much not paleo and I don't know why you would want to continue drinking that after reading the ingredients, especially aspartame! Have you ever tried Kombucha? GT brand is very good or learn to make your own.

Eggs really are a staple of the paleo diet for those who aren't allergic. Is there any way you could incorporate them into a smoothie or hide the taste in another dish?

Frozen meat and veggies are fine, just make sure no GMO, antibiotics, hormones, and free range or pastured and preferable grass fed. Actually a lot of us take a day and make large meals, then freeze/refrigerate them.

There are a lot of suggestions about budgeting your meals, go ahead and search. Some of the basic ones include buying in bulk, I get 1/4 lambs or pigs. Also feel free to set up craigslist barter ads for things you have but don't need and trade out your profession for organic food. Might seem like a long shot, but I have got some great food and met great people this way. I run a marketing firm that does software development and have traded out jobs for $100's worth of meat before.

Do as best as you can, be creative and stick with it. As long as you are feeling better than you were before is all that matters. If you have a specific goal in mind let us know. As far as weight loss, I would recommend cutting down your carb intake and definitely get rid of the soda.
